One Month Old...and in the Hospital

We had a rough weekend. We were up all night with Alaina on Friday night. At first I thought she was just fussy and wouldn't go to sleep. Later, however, her crying started to sound completely different. She also seemed very congested, and she didn't want to be on her back. Todd and I took turns putting her on her stomach on our chests, which was more comfortable for her. We could tell that something was wrong. Thankfully, our pediatrician's office had hours on Saturday morning for sick kids, so we took her in at 8:30 a.m. She had a fever of 101, and anytime a baby this young has a fever, they are given a ton of tests and admitted to the hospital. Her blood and urine were tested, plus she was given a spinal tap and a chest x-ray. Most of the tests take 48 hours to complete, so we should hear about the results today. The chest x-ray on Saturday showed the possibility of fluid in her lungs (which is basically pneumonia) but our doctor didn't think it was definitive, so they took another x-ray today. If there is fluid in her lungs, we'll be here another 7-10 days to treat it. In the meantime, she's been given antibiotics. It's possible that she just has a cold of some kind. Thankfully, her temperature has been normal (without the aid of Tylenol) since Saturday night, and she's been eating well. Those are good signs. I'm lucky enough to have wireless Internet here at the hospital. Hopefully she'll be well soon and feeling better than ever. I'm relieved to have her here where she can be treated instead of still being at home wondering how serious it was.
Here's Alaina's crib at the hospital (kind of looks like a cage at the zoo!):

This is Alaina today taking a nap. I think she's a little more comfortable now that her IV is in her foot instead of her head (they had trouble getting it into her little veins on Saturday -- they tried her hand and her foot but couldn't get it in):
This was Alaina on Saturday with an IV in her head (poor thing!) -- her headband kind of reminds me of The Karate Kid or someone Jazzercising in the 80s:
